Programming with a Purpose
Michael Howard and David LeBlanc's new book, Writing Secure Code, is a very good guide to both what and how for the Windows platform. Its 477 pages describe common security problems, analyze them, and explain appropriate remedies. Along the way, the authors also show how security analysis itself works (i.e. how to go through your product systematically to find weaknesses before the guys in black hats do).

Schools of Thought
Like a lot of ex-academics, I used to make jokes (many of them bitter) about how poorly my university education had prepared me for programming in the real world. By the time I finished my Ph.D., I knew message routing in massively parallel computers inside and out. However, I was only vaguely familiar with version control, had never used a bug-tracking system, and had no idea how to translate requirements into a design, or a design into a product that someone I'd never met, a thousand miles away, could install and use.

The Microsoft Macintosh
April 10, 2002; Mountain View, CA: Microsoft's monthly Silicon Valley lectures always draw a crowd—and many of the attendees carry notebook PCs. This time, though, a good number of the attendees carried sleek Titanium Powerbooks. They came to hear Kevin Browne, general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh business unit, discuss the future of Microsoft's Mac support. Browne's message: Although Microsoft's technical agreement with Apple has expired, Mac applications will continue to be developed "as long as there's a business case for them." He went on to say that it's his personal opinion that the Mac business unit "will last as long as Apple does."

CTIA Wireless 2002
Welcome to CTIA 2002 and the wireless future. With over a thousand exhibitors, CTIA has a right to call itself the largest wireless trade show in the world. At last week's event in Orlando, Florida, I saw more cute, feature-rich cell phones (like the fan folding prototype to the left) than you could count, so after running out of digits I gave up on trying to report on new cell phones and switched over to what's happening in wireless networks and other devices.

DIMA/PMA 2002
DIMA/PMA is the Digital and Photographic Marketing Association trade show held every year in Orlando, Florida, the winter vacation paradise for friends of Mickey Mouse, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. The crowds that flock to DIMA/PMA aren't there for the local attractions though; they came to see what's happening in the photographic industry: Specifically, what they are going to be selling in their stores this spring, and what they can look forward to for the holiday season later in the year. It's an annual pilgrimage for those of us who can't wait to find out what cool cameras and gadgets are under development.

The Best of BYTE: Volume 2 - Heuristic Algorithms
In this volume of Best of BYTE, we explore the emergence of some heuristic algorithms. Although we have only scratched the surface of this intriguing subject, we hope we've suggested the potential of the synthesis of heuristics and algorithms.
